The author nails the essence of a tempestuous period. I found the gore manageable, and the sadness wasn’t enough for me to stop reading, and if you can get past that, the book is great. In my opinion, a mature 14-year-old could read it, but not without a certain degree of dejection. One of the first things to note about this book is that it has the capacity to disturb anyone who is uncomfortable with gore and sadness. He sees dozens of men die painful deaths, including his friends. He soon joins, and is shocked by the emotional and physical toll that such a brutal war has taken on him. Ken enlists in the army, and Allan develops the idea that the war is a carefree adventure. Allan grew up on a farm alongside childhood friend Ken. A consummate artist, Craft conveys the sheen of pearls, the delicacy of lace, the volume of period fashion. While pulling some visual details from the Art Nouveau tradition-most notably the symbolic gilt peacocks in the cover's border-the oil-over-watercolor scenes are mostly reminiscent of French 17th and 18th-century paintings. Finally, the prince compares his guest's sweet voice to the warbler that sings at his window. Later, it is transformed into a Maxfield Parrish-inspired fairy godmother. Early on, a bluebird's injury creates a reason for Cinderella to linger in the forest, whereupon she encounters the prince in her unadorned state. Craft incorporates the creature at key points throughout her tale. ![]() An introductory note points to sources that include The Arthur Rackham Fairy Book, Andrew Lang's The Blue Fairy Book, and the Grimms' "Aschenputtel," in which a bird grants the wish.
