The artists and writers who came together on the eve of the Richard Donner movie in support of Siegel and Shuster were unprecedented and marked the beginning of a struggle over creator’s rights in comics that continues on. The unfortunate behind the scenes turmoil behind the Man of Tomorrow has inspired controversy and led to a battle over creator ownership in the often-treacherous world of comics. The death of Siegel’s father led the character to embody all the elements of the ultimate father figure, a trait that has continued to the present. Two geeky and shy students who were often the target of bullies, they created a hero for all to aspire towards. Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor have bewitched generations of children around the world and this is in no small part due to the imagination of their creators.įrom their humble beginnings in Canada and Ohio respectively, Shuster and Siegel were in many ways the ultimate underdogs. The Man of Steel was faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created a true American original with the debut of Superman in Action Comics #1.
